So Senator Obama's retiring pastor Jeremiah Wright gave a fiery sermon where he railed on classism and racism in America. He made some unnecessary remarks, and used some salty language to drive the point home. Not his finest moment at the pulpit.
Much hay will probably be made of this, but the bottom line is that Obama was not in the congregation at the time, has clearly condemned (and rejected, and denounced) the remarks in question, and the retiring pastor Wright no longer has anything to do with the Obama campaign. Period.
If you want to question Wright's patriotism, you can start with the fact that he's a former U.S. Marine with three Presidential Commendations. Have you ever heard of an ex-marine using salty language from time to time? (some would argue that there is nothing more patriotic than an ex-marine who uses salty language). He also built his congregation from a mere 87 members in 1972 to over 10,000 with 30 years of stressing community and family values, strong work ethic and helping the poor. His church currently has over 70 programs including youth, literacy, adult education and computer tutoring.
Wright grew up in a time when blacks had the right to be threatened with police dogs and fire hoses, and yet has created a world of good in a tough part of town. He should be given a salute and a pat on the back as he heads out to pasture.
